The Mystery of the Whispering Mummy (The Three Investigators, 3)
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (March, 2001)
Authors: Robert Arthur, Alfred Hitchcock, and Hector Sebastian
Average review score:

Usual high quality in an outstanding series for kids
My introduction to this series was my older brother's slightly worn Scholastic copy of Mystery of the Green Ghost. We both read it several times, and once we found out there were more, look out! We read them from the library, we cajoled Mom into taking us to the mall to buy them, we bought them at a local used bookstore. We were both hooked!
I can recommend every book in this series. My brother and I both read all the Hardy Boys (and liked them a lot), but these blow them out of the water! I think you can get 1-10 new (they've been reprinted), the rest you'll have to get used.
I've still got a complete set, but I'm rebuying them for a nephew. He's as excited about them as I was over 20 years ago. Excellent characters, spooky happenings, and just enough chills to keep a kid's pulse racing.
If you have kids, I can't recommend these highly enough.

Another baffling, highly enjoyable mystery
The Three Investigators do it again, solving their strangest mystery thus far. This case involves a 3000-year-old mummy that mysteriously whispers in some archaic tongue to one professor alone. The boys overcome a number of hurdles set in their way, some involving great personal danger to themselves, to solve this perplexing mystery and, at the same time, return an unusual Abyssinian cat to his loving owner. As the series continues, we learn more and more about the boys themselves and their secret headquarters, see them employing more gadgets in their work, and see the logical gymnastics Jupiter Jones continually performs to find resolutions to case after case. There is more deductive reasoning exhibited in this case than in the trio's previous two adventures, and that only serves to further draw the reader into the world of Rocky Beach, California. As I continue to re-read these classic stories from my youth, my appreciation for the writing of Robert Arthur grows more and more. I was indeed pleased to see that my suspicions in this case proved correct in the end; even had I been wrong, I would not have been embarrassed because Arthur's tight plot works on two levels--that of young readers, who can certainly follow the case with understanding and eager anticipation for each upcoming chapter, as well as that of adults. This is a great mystery story in all regards.

You gotta love 'em!
They were my Heroes in my Childhood before Iron Maiden and Rock music enterd my Life and I became the Evil Person I am today. This is what I would buy my Kids If I ever should have some ( I'm trying to find a Girlfried-anybody out there! ) Their stories are creepy and suspenseful and Aunt Mathilda was the worst enemy they ever had. As I sad - you gotta love this.

Iwo Jima - A Retrospective
Published in Paperback by Shiba Hill Ltd (February, 1996)
Author: J.A. Hitchcock

A Wonderful Remembrance for WWII Vets and Buffs
I found this package a treat - the best part is the mini photo album with the color photos. This is a great "brag book" for vets who were there the day of the anniversary or were in the battle itself and couldn't make it to the anniversary commemoration. The small bag of black sand is touching and the slim book is informative.

Another great Hitchcock book!
I ordered two of Hitchcock's other books at the same time (The Ghosts of Okinawa and Torment), but this one holds a special place in my heart. My father was in the battle of Iwo Jima, so everything in this wonderful package means so much to me. Kudos to the author! Great photos!

A must for WWII history buffs!
This unique package surprised me. I didn't know this event took place on Iwo Jima in 1995, so I found the articles in the slim book very interesting and the mini photo album was worth the price of this package alone! Highly recommended.

Long Life Now: Strategies for Staying Alive
Published in Paperback by Celestial Arts (January, 1996)
Authors: Lee Hitchcox, Lee Hitchcock, Bob Dahm, and Brian Duffy
Average review score:

Fine advice, well-written!
Lee has written a wonderful book that takes on all the myths about dietary and lifestyle health that have been support for years by economic interests at the detrement of our society. I have used this book as a reference since it came out and a resource to those who might challange with so many erroneous dietary cliches (e.g. "drink milk to have stronger bones"). If every adult read this book and digested it, what an enlightened, healthy society we would become...if only. Great job Lee!!

Continually Useful Book
When I have a question about health, diet or food. This is the book I always turn to first. I've read and re-read this book many times and it's one of my most used references.

Lee covers dietary components like proteins, fats, carbohydrates, additives, dairy, seafood and vitamins. He also summarizes some of the different diets around the world and correlates them with different levels of disease and sickness--in the process finding those diets which are the most healthful. Lee then provides recipes and cooking strategies to integrate the best foods into your own diet.

Weight control, exercise, biological age, seniors, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes and more are examined and Lee quotes research and the plain facts concerning each. The ladder half of the book is devoted to the food and drug industry and their interactions with government organizations like the FDA, RDA, USDA and APA. He writes allot about chemicals, pesticides and toxins found in most foods and their is a chapter concerning Organic vs. Conventional growing.

Throughout the book you will find very amusing and often absurd quotes by industry leaders touting the benefits of their toxic foods. These snippets of corporate propaganda and government idiocy are often rendered disturbing when they punctuate the actual truths which Lee sites.

It's a real shame the vast majority of American's are mindless of the harm they are doing to their bodies with their diet. A book like this is a great education and wakeup call to most anyone. My thanks to the author for sharing his knowledge.

Also, if you've read this book and liked it check out "Milk : The Deadly Poison" by Robert Cohen, Jane Heimlich. Kinda poetic title, huh. :)

Is Your Health- The Most important Asset You Own ?
If you believe that your health is the single most important asset you own then the book "Long Life Now: Startegies for Staying Alive" by Doctor Hitchcox is for you. Well written, well laid out - designed to be read "Long Life Now" is the most comprehensive round-up of profound and accurate information compiled to inform and educate us on what is going on with our culture when it comes to health. This book is a must have in all libraries. This book is a major reference book for all concerned individuals and activists.

Doctor Hitchcox has throughly researched and verified his facts and is to be commended for the time he took and the throughness of his work. He has written a highly insightful and at times terrifying account of the current cultural practices and values in this country around health and environmental issues.

This is a book worth the time to read - don't plan to read it all at once. You will need time to digest what he says. If you can only read one section in the book read his discussion on diet and its relationship to long life. This discussion alone is well worth the read. Read this book if you value your life and quality of life

Net Crimes & Misdemeanors: Outmaneuvering the Spammers, Swindlers, and Stalkers Who Are Targeting You Online
Published in Paperback by Cyberage Books (31 July, 2002)
Author: J.A. Hitchcock
Average review score:

An insightful and terrific read
I don't consider myself a newbie on the net, but while browsing through this book at a local bookstore the other day, I began to discover things I didn't know. So I bought the book! Since then, it stays on my desk in arm's reach in case I have questions or need to look up something. I can't tell you how many times someone has sent me an e-mail claiming the message they're forwarding "really happened." All I have to do is check out the chapter on Urban Legends to see what the deal is. All of the tips and advice are terrific, the real-life situations compelling and the information is easy to understand, but didn't make me feel like a "dummy." Kudos to J.A. Hitchcock for writing such a wonderful book - I hope there's another one coming out soon that covers other online issues not covered in this one.

Even Experts Can Become Victims
A friend of mine bought me this book because I'd gotten burned badly in an online auction (I was the buyer). Although my friend put a sticky note where the auction chapter was, I began reading this from the beginning and Chapter 1 is a doozy - about the author and her experience with a cyberstalker. She considered herself an expert about the Internet, yet she still became a victim, which I found very humbling. She also didn't let the jerks get away with it. I admire her strength and patience (it took her six years to finally see them go to jail) and it made me do something more about my auction fiasco.

As a result of the wonderful advice given in this book, not only about online auctions, but just about everything else as well, I finally got my money back, the seller got kicked off the online auction site and it looks like this person who scammed me might be seeing the inside of a jail cell.

I thank the author for the great advice and I have bought several copies of Net Crimes & Misdemeanors to give out as Christmas presents this year.

Scary, yet informative
I have to admit that when I first picked up this book, I was thinking "Oh no, another book to scare people off the Internet." But as I began skimming through it, I kept finding things that I did online, such as auctions, shopping, newsgroups, chat rooms and more. Before I knew it, I was reading this chapter by chapter and actually making notes as I went along, realizing that although the book does have some horror stories (actual case examples), it offers very useful and commensense advice.

I even thought my computer was protected with the antivirus software I had installed until I realized there's a lot more to it than just installing it and that a firewall is a must.

Actually, this book is a must for anyone - buy this for yourself, members of your family, your friends, anyone who is online. It's not written like a "Dummies" book, so even if you think you know everything about the 'net, you'll still enjoy this book.

Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators in the Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot
Published in Paperback by Random House Children's Books (May, 1978)
Author: Robert Arthur
Average review score:

Three Investigators Books are Fantastic!!
I used to read my older brother's Three Investigator books when he borrowed them from the school library. I so wanted to live in a trailer with a secret escape hatch like Jupiter had.
I have bought as many books as I could find for my son who is eleven and loves reading about Jupiter, Bob and Pete's adventures. We look in every secondhand shop we can find and are slowly getting the entire series.

Please bring the Three Investigators Back!!!!
I, too, read all of the books when I was a child. Now that I'm looking for books to give to friends' children, I discover that these marvelous books are out of print! I beseech the publisher to re-issue them asap. The stuttering parrot has remained with me all these years, so much so that when I hear a reference to Sherlock Holmes, it is the stuttering parrot's "to to be" that immediately pops into my mind. On behalf of a bookwormwho wants to share with the next generation, please bring the boys back! The three investigators may not have been classic literature, but they brought me tremendous pleasure.

Should not be out of print!
The Three Investigators series was the best set of mysteries I ever read, in addition to Agatha Christie's. I read all of them I could find. And yet, years later, I decided to look them up and not a single library had them anymore. These books should not be out of print! There is something special in Jupiter, Bob, and Pete's (I think I got the names right) detective agency, and the mysteries are especially unique and intriguing. This book is especially memorable. To-to-to be, or not to-to-to be... And that's not the only parrot that's odd

Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators in the Secret of Terror Castle
Published in Paperback by Random House Children's Books (May, 1978)
Author: Robert Arthur
Average review score:

Five stars is not enough!
WOW!! This is my first visit (finally) to Amazon.com, and the very first thing I did was to search for the three investigators. What a wonderful surprise to have found them -- I'm so flooded with memories I don't know where to start.

I was introduced to them as a kid in Buffalo in the early '70s by my best friend's copy of "The Secret of Terror Castle." The first one I owned was a scholastic book services paperback of "The Mystery of the Green Ghost," and I can actually remember exactly where and when I received my first hardback, "The Mystery of the Talking Skull." Sadly, my set disappeared when my parents moved. The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew are fine in their own way, but they were NEVER a match for Jupe, Pete, and Bob!

Any one of the books in this series is the perfect gift for a child these days -- it will capture their imagination and help infuse them with a lifelong love of reading. The writing and pacing is just right, there are funny and scary parts that any kid can relate to, and the characters are developed in a way that really makes them come to life. I know Alfred Hitchcock is gone from the new versions, but his presence in the original issues as a real person had us convinced that if we could only get to California we could find Rocky Beach and the Jones Salvage Yard! I don't know how many 3x5 cards we went through as we made business cards for our own detective agency!

Thanks, Random House!! I can't wait to give every book in the series to the kids in my life (and I'll have to get copies for myself, too). I'd love to see a re-issue in hardback of the old versions with Hitch in them, but I guess I'll just have to keep searching used book stores for those. It's sure great to see The Three Investigators back!

The Best Series for Young Readers!
At one time I used to own the first 23 titles of AH & The Three Investigators. As I've grown older, I've lost titles until I recently realized I only had two left. I've lamented to my wife, after searching used book stores high and low for the other titles and not finding them, that this was a great blow against childhood reading. I was so glad that they are still being printed and read! The format may be different and Alfred Hitchcock is lamentably missing, but they are still as readable and enjoyable as they were when I was a child!

I highly recommend this series for young readers who dream of adventure and suspense. They invigorated my youth and helped interest me in reading and writing. I hope to God that there are more coming out!

And for those of us who remember Alfred Hitchcock, maybe Random House could put out a collectors series of the books as they were originally released - covers, illustrations and all. I would certainly snap them up!

I thought I was the only one
Wow. I'm 33 years old and thought I am probably the only adult who would pick up a Three Investigator's book and read it. I am here looking for some of The Three Investigator's books for my girlfriend's son. I saved a few of the books I had as a child, a couple of them in hardback, with the intent of saving them for my children. Most of the books I read in the series I checked out at the library. Reading these books provided some of my fondest childhood memories. The young man I am buying these books for has just discovered a love for reading and I believe that these stories will hook them just like they did me. Amazon, please act upon the suggestions of others and release the entire series if possible.

The Ghosts of Okinawa
Published in Paperback by Shiba Hill Ltd (01 April, 2000)
Author: J.A. Hitchcock
Average review score:

Excellent, spooky, wild!
My parents sent me this book for Christmas (signed by the author!). They know I love good "ghost stories" and The Ghosts of Okinawa lives up to that. I found the "tall tales" entertaining, noting the similarities to ghost sightings here in the USA, and the local ghost stories were sometimes quite chilling. I especially liked the information on the cultural aspects of how Okinawans feel about ghosts, the dead, and the supernatural. A very interesting read and the photo with the ghost in it still gives me chills!

Good introduction to Japanese Ghost Stories
As a contributor to this book, I am glad to see the stories I contributed rendered in Ms. Hitchcock's felicitous prose. She has once again succeeded in her effort to bring the east and west together through folklore. Her clear and to-the-point writing style adds an element of authenticity, making these stories all the more chilling.

I was happy to see the section on doing your own ghost hunting to 1) give those of us who are inexperienced in ghost hunting a place to start, and 2) prevent people from just "grabbing a flashlight and going," as she says in her book.

Though a thin volume at present, (I know I could read stories like these forever) I'm sure Ms. Hitchcock, being as energetic as she is, will add more in the future.

If you found this book interesting, you would probably like Folktales of Okinawa, translated by Ms. Hitchcock, and Obake: Ghost Stories in Hawai'i by Glen Grant.

This book is great
I read this book about 2 years ago and I must say, it's awesome! I love reading books, books that are thrilling, books I can soak into... etc. This book, I could not put down, because I love to read ghost stories, and plus it was thrilling when I was reading it because I lived in Okinawa at the time.
I'm not exactly what you call brave, if I were ever to encounter any ghosts from the stories, but I like to read about them. There are so many other ghost stories about Okinawa, not in this book that are amazing. You can actually believe these stories, because when the war came upon Okinawa, Naha was hit first and the military base closest to Naha is Camp Kinser. There was once a human skull discovered there by my friend's brother, and people say the base is built over a graveyard, which is most likely of the victims who died in the war. The book is very convincing.
It's great if you can actually see the location of where the ghost stories are based.
All in all, you must read this book, it's great! And check out other scary stories and also "The Girl with the White Flag." Also based in Okinawa!

Writing With Hitchcock: The Collaboration of Alfred Hitchcock and John Michael Hayes
Published in Paperback by Faber & Faber (July, 2001)
Author: Steven DeRosa
Average review score:

Fair balanced presentation of Hitchcock-Hayes collaboration
When the auteur myth took root it managed to both change the stature of directors and displace a lot of talented writers. While there's no doubt that Hitchcock is still a giant in cinema, many of the books written about him tend to focus only on Hitch's contribution. DeRosa's book provides fair balance and recognizes writer Joh Michael Hayes' contribution to a fruitful collaboration. The four pictures that Hayes worked on (Rear Window, The Trouble With Harry, To Catch A Thief and the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much)are all among Hitch's best work as a director. This isn't to suggest that Hitch didn't contribute to story ideas; he would frequently sketch out a general plot but writers like Hayes (or Ernest Lehman to name another strong Hitch collaborator) would be left along to write the script once the basic plot was discussed.

DeRosa knows his stuff and his research is exhaustive. I would have to liked to have seen more storyboard to script comparisons and comments from other writers and directors but that probably would have changed the scope of the book (and the focus). Without tarnishing Hitch's reputation, Writing With Hitchcock makes a strong case for the importance of Hayes contribution to Hitch's film.

After they had a falling out Hitch would frequently dismiss Hayes contributions to his films in print( such as in Truffaut's interview with Hitchcock. Hitch was generally pretty good about recognizing the importance of his collaborators)

Luckily that bitterness can't color the fine work of these well matched collaborators. This book along (with the inteviews Hayes granted for the DVD editions of their four films) finally puts it all into perspective. It also allows one to celebrate the great art and entertainment of Hitch and Hayes.

A fresh portrait of Hitch
One of the most important writers to work side by side with Alfred Hitchcock was John Michael Hayes, who collaborated with the director on Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, The Trouble with Harry, and The Man Who Knew Too Much. These films made over a two-year period (1953-55) lifted Hitchcock to a level of popularity at a time when he seemed to be growing out of touch with his audience.

This fascinating book details the relationship between Hayes and Hitchcock, exploring how the two collaborated on the writing and production of the films. Relying on a mass of documents from studio records to Hitchcock's and Hayes' personal papers, as well as anecdotal accounts, Steven DeRosa chronicles the ups and downs of this collaboration, and then analyzes the films themselves. DeRosa presents a fresh and complex portrait of the director while also providing one of the best accounts of the process of writing for film and the indignities screenwriters often endure.

Chalk one up for the writers!
At last someone has challenged the myth that Hitchcock did everything himself. Not so. He had some very skilled writers whose talents helped make his films so memorable. One of those writers - perhaps the most important - was John Michael Hayes, whose screenplays for Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, Trouble with Harry and the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much, had a tremendous impact on Hitchcock's films of the fifties, and on the way we view Hitchcock today.

In "Writing With Hitchcock", Steven DeRosa gives Hayes his long overdue credit. Hayes' contributions to each of the films are described in detail, as are the steps taken by the censors to reign things in - to protect audiences from the idea that Cary Grant and Grace Kelly would have premarital relations, or that Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day's boy was kidnapped, are just a couple of examples! Each film is gone over in detail from the writing phase to release, and the reader is given a chance to see the relationship between the writer and director blossom, and then die.

There are lots of anecdotes and a summarizing of both Hitchcock and Hayes' careers after they parted which is very illuminating, especially the potential sequel to Rear Window that Hayes worked on that would have been far more interesting than the Chris Reeve tv version. The final chapter is an analysis of each of the screenplays, and this was especially interesting to me as an aspiring screenwriter. Well worth the price of admission! I only wish it was in hardcover.

The Secret of Skeleton Island
Published in Hardcover by Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media (January, 1985)
Authors: Robert Arthur, Alfred Hitchcock, and Harry Kane
Average review score:

A Good Book! (HA,HA)
This book is a great book. You can't tell who the bad guy is at all! The story really twists and you may start to think that Chris is the bad guy. Chris is a boy who looks for the treasure that a pirate was supposed to dump into the water. The 3 investigators go on a trip to Skelleton island to shoot a picture, but really to discover the secret of a ghost that is haunting Bob Andrews dad movie crew. When they come during a storm a guy takes and strands the 3 investigators on an island. That is were they meet Chris! There are quite a few suspicious people that I suspected. This is one of the best books out of the series(in my opinion). This book may look stupid but it is a great book. And beware you will be staying up all night reading this book!

Ghosts, Pirates, and Treasure--Oh Boy!
In this adventure, the Three Investigators venture far away from Rocky Beach, California--3000 miles away to a haunted island on the east coast where Pete's father is working to restore an old thrill park for a movie he is working on. Having met with stolen equipment and the appearance of a ghost, the boys are sent for to figure out who is trying to keep the movie company away from Skeleton Island. The boys meet with danger and duplicity at every turn, it seems, getting themselves into even more trouble than usual--several times by their own doing. ...

There aren't really any plot twists or surprises in this story. What seems to me to be the biggest clue to the whole mystery flops out at you like a dead fish right in the middle of the book, and you have to wait until the end to see Jupiter finally seize upon it. Overall, though, it is still a pretty good story. It's hard to go wrong when you are writing about pirates, ghosts, and treasure. My childhood obsession with the secret headquarters at the Salvage Yard obviously continues because I certainly missed it in this book. The boys seemed to be somewhat out of their element here, and it shows. Of course, nothing can stop them from solving a mystery once they are on the case.

It's one of the best books I've read!
The book is about three investagators that are taping a movie, but well they are taping they acutually experience the tragic story that happend 10 years ago! Trust me you would love this story! Well I'm not finished with the book yet so I don't know the rest but it's really good so far! That's my review!

Torment
Published in Paperback by Shiba Hill Ltd (February, 1995)
Author: J.A. Hitchcock
Average review score:

TORMENT is a page-turner
This book kept me enthralled from beginning to end. I didn't put it down until I was finished (which my spouse hated me for, ha ha). This is a book for anyone who's been in the military, in love or who has a great sense of humor.

A must-read for anyone!
I was hesitant to buy this book, but since it was supposed to be about Okinawa, Japan and the Marine Corps, I figured, "What the hey?" I wasn't disappointed - I was pleasantly surprised at how well written the book is. You get drawn into the story by Slim, the main character, who tells his tale. And the ending is nothing like what I expected.

Highly underrated - a wonderful read!
This book is highly underrated - I truthfully didn't know what to expect when I ordered all of Ms. Hitchcock's books, but this one takes you by the balls (so to speak) and makes you gasp as you read it. A must for anyone - men, women, former military, vets - a disturbingly unexpected surprise ending!
